Parts Galore Receives Taxable Incremental Funding for Expansion

2/5/08

Parts Galore, an auto parts salvage business has built a new 7,800 square feet building on its 7.3 acre site at the corner of Tireman and Epworth. The expansion is being supported by a Taxable Incremental Funding (“TIF”). The project also included the demolition of two blighted buildings and the renovation of two deemed viable as well as the removal of contaminated soil and debris.

The first Parts Galore, located at Eight Mile and Hoover, opened three years ago, with this, its second location opening in September 2007. The operation could be described as a modern take on a junkyard. Up to 2,000 vehicles that have been environmentally cleansed are organized in rows by manufacturer, making it easy for customers to find the exact part for which they are searching.

Customers first enter the new retail building to pay a $1 admission fee and sign a liability waiver. Wheelbarrows for part collection can be rented for $1. They use their own tools to pull needed parts and then exit back through the retail building where they pay for what they have selected.

General manager Bill Wild says that most of his customers are backyard mechanics although smaller shops also make use of Parts Galore. He estimates there are generally 2,000 vehicles on-site at any given time and that 1,200 are turned over every month, meaning there is "constantly fresh inventory."

The newly constructed building has room for two other retail operations; each space available for lease is 1,800 square feet. In the coming year, Parts Galore plans to launch its own towing service. Its expansion is expected to generate $1.97 million in capital investment and create up to 25 jobs.
